Liquidation and insolvency asset sales in Doncaster
Rail work makes the Doncaster appointment unusual. A rolling stock maintenance or component firm fails with tooling that only a handful of businesses in the country can use, wheelsets and bogies that belong to an operator or a leasing company, and a depot that may be on the railway's land with its own access rules. The market is narrow and the property questions are wide, and the office holder needs both mapped before anything is offered.
We act for administrators, liquidators, lenders and landlords across the borough. The first visit produces a schedule with photographs and serial numbers, a written opinion of value and a list of customer property, finance and hire. Sales are online timed auctions, run in situ where the site can take buyers and their vehicles, which we check at the site visit. Bids are taken online from across the UK, and the trade at Sheffield, Rotherham, Wakefield and Scunthorpe is near enough to view in person. Use the contact form to describe the appointment.
Rail depot tooling with a narrow set of buyers
Wheel lathes, bogie drops, jacking systems, overhead cranes rated for rail vehicles and the gauges and rigs that go with them are not general engineering plant. The buyers are other maintainers, the operators and leasing companies themselves, and a small number of dealers who supply the industry overseas. We find them through the online catalogue and direct contact, and we describe each item with enough detail on capacity, gauge and condition for a buyer to bid without a visit.
Everything else on the site is easier. General machine tools, welding plant, fork trucks, hand tools, stores and office contents are catalogued for the fabrication and engineering trade across South Yorkshire and beyond. Where the depot is on railway land, access for viewing and collection is by arrangement with the landowner, and we agree the days and the safety rules before the catalogue is published. Wheelsets, bogies and components that belong to an operator are listed, held and released against a receipt.
Glass lines, toughening furnaces and the cost of switching them off
Glass processing plant on the older estates raises a question of timing that most sales do not. Whether the plant can be seen working is one of the things a buyer prices on. Once a line has been shut down for weeks and stripped of its control system, the risk of a restart sits with the buyer and the bidding reflects it. Machines that can safely be run stay connected for the viewing day so the seller's staff can demonstrate them where agreed, and we photograph them running. Everything else is isolated and left safe, and all lots are isolated by a competent person before collection.
The same goes for CNC cutting tables, edging and drilling machines, washing plants and insulating glass lines. Glass processors across the UK can bid online, and a machine that has been demonstrated is easier to describe. Heavy items are sold subject to a method statement with an agreed removal date, and at Kirk Sandall and Wheatley Hall Road the yard, the route out and the loading are recorded when we walk the site.

How the auction runs
Insolvency assets are usually sold by online timed auction. The catalogue is photographed on site, listed with estimates and opened for bidding for a period agreed with the office holder, usually one to two weeks. A viewing day is held at the premises. Lots are offered as seen under the auction terms, and buyers are expected to inspect before bidding.
Buyers pay the hammer price plus a buyer's premium, with VAT charged where it applies and shown separately on the invoice. Payment is taken before collection. Buyers arrange and pay for the removal of their lots during an agreed collection window, using specialist movers where the weight and dimensions call for them. Our staff supervise collection so the premises are protected and every removal is signed off.
Private treaty is used for individual assets where a direct sale may produce more than the auction, subject to the office holder's approval.
The liquidation and insolvency asset sales page covers who instructs the sale, what an insolvency practitioner needs from us, securing the site, timescales, for directors.
Questions about selling in Doncaster
- The depot is on railway land with restricted access. Can buyers still view?
Yes, by arrangement. We agree viewing and collection days with the landowner and the office holder in advance, with the safety briefing, the escort and the vehicle rules that apply, and the catalogue tells buyers what to expect. Buyers who cannot attend rely on the photographs and descriptions, so we take more of both on a restricted site than on an ordinary one. Collection is booked by slot to keep the number of vehicles on site within what the landowner allows.
- Does being close to the Sheffield and Rotherham engineering trade help the sale?
It makes viewing easy, which matters for plant that is worth inspecting before a bid. A press brake or a plasma table in Doncaster is a short drive from a large engineering trade, and the A1(M), M18 and M1 keep transport straightforward for buyers arranging their own removal. Bidding itself is online and open to the whole UK, so the catalogue is never limited to the firms that can reach the viewing day.
