Plant and construction equipment auctions in Wolverhampton

A yellow excavator sitting on top of a pile of dirt

Getting a low loader into a Black Country yard is half the job. The estates at Bilston, Springvale, Wednesfield and Willenhall were laid out when lorries were shorter, so a plant sale there is planned around what the gate and the road outside actually take. We do that measuring before the catalogue is written, not on collection day.

The plant itself comes from two places. Construction contractors and plant hire firms in and around Wolverhampton run the usual site fleet of excavators, dumpers, telehandlers and rollers. The city's manufacturers, from the pressings shops at Wednesfield to the aerospace and engine plants at i54, own telehandlers, forklifts, generators and compressors as yard kit and sell them when a site closes or moves. Both sell by online timed auction, in one catalogue or separately as the situation needs.

Use the contact form to tell us what and where. We will come and measure the gate.

Old estates and the lorry that will not fit

Many Black Country estates are older and narrower than the newer parks, and larger loads need planning. For plant that means four questions before anything else. Can a low loader reach the yard? Can it turn, or must it reverse in? Is there hard standing to load from? Is the road outside wide enough to wait on? Where the answers allow it, the sale runs from the yard and buyers collect in slots. Where they do not, the bigger machines can be moved to a compound first and the small plant sold from where it is.

Buyers are told in the catalogue which applies to each lot. A note that says collection by plant trailer only, no low loader access, stops a buyer sending the wrong vehicle and losing a morning.

The newer sites are checked in the same way. i54 at junction 2 of the M54 and the Wednesfield Way estates were built for artics, and the Black Country Route reaches the M6 at junction 10.

Yard plant from the factories and the pressings shops

Wolverhampton's manufacturers own more plant than they think. A pressings shop at Willenhall has a telehandler for unloading coil, a forklift or two, a compressor and a standby generator. An aerospace supplier at i54 may have a fleet of counterbalance trucks and a scissor lift for maintenance. When the site closes or relocates, that kit is sold alongside the presses and the machine tools, and we lot it separately so that plant buyers can find it.

Walsall, Dudley, West Bromwich and Cannock are across the M6 and the M5, Telford is down the M54, Stafford comes in from the north, and Kidderminster and Bridgnorth are across country, all well placed to come and look before bidding closes. The sale is online and open to buyers from any part of the country.

What yard plant makes depends on the hours against its age, the condition, the certification and the way it is lotted. We take the reading off the meter and put it in the description rather than working from the paperwork.

How the auction works

Each machine is a lot with a full description, photographs and the hour reading. Bidding runs online for a set period, usually one to two weeks, and lots close in sequence. A bid in the last minutes extends the close for that lot.

Plant is offered as seen under the auction terms, and buyers are expected to inspect before bidding. The buyer pays the hammer price plus a buyer's premium, with VAT charged where it applies and shown separately on the invoice. Payment is required before removal.

Buyers arrange and pay for the removal of their lots within the agreed window. What that takes depends on the machine: wheeled plant with road registration can be driven away, and tracked or heavy machines go on a low loader. Nothing leaves the site until it is paid for and signed out.

The plant and construction equipment auctions page covers what buyers want to know, finance and ownership checks, where the sale runs from, reserves and the market, alternatives.

Questions about selling in Wolverhampton

Our yard at Willenhall backs onto a residential street. Will collection cause trouble?

It can, so we plan for it. Collection slots are set for working hours, one lorry at a time, and we tell buyers where to wait so that nobody parks across a neighbour's drive. If the street cannot take a low loader at all, we move the bigger plant to a compound before the sale and only the small kit goes out through the yard gate. We say which it is in the catalogue.

Is it worth selling a couple of old dumpers, or only a full fleet?

Any job, big or small, so yes. Two dumpers are two lots in a sale that also has other sellers' plant in it, and they get the same photographs and description as a machine from a fleet of fifty. If the machines are worth more to a local buyer than the trouble of a catalogue, we will say so and suggest a private treaty sale instead.

Guides

  • How used machinery is valued

Buyers pay for what a machine will do for them, less what it costs to get it out and running. This guide explains how make, hours, tooling, demand and removal cost feed a guide price, and why that price is not book value.

  • Selling a commercial vehicle fleet

Fleet sales turn on paperwork as much as on price. This guide covers the V5C, MOT and plating documents, clearing finance before listing, keys and livery, recording mileage and tachograph data, and how to defleet in batches while still trading.
