Complete site dispersal auctions in Reading

Industrial area with various equipments in daytime

Reading looks like an office town from the motorway, but underneath the business parks there is a working industrial base, and it closes and moves like any other. An engineering workshop on Battle Farm or Portman Road whose owner retires. A vehicle repairer on Cardiff Road whose lease is up. A distribution unit at Theale that the operator is consolidating into a bigger shed elsewhere on the M4. A plant hire yard on the edge of town whose land is worth more as housing.

Each of these is a site dispersal. We list everything on the premises, sell it in one online timed auction with a viewing day at the site, and manage the collection window until the building is empty and the keys go back.

The trade along the M4 corridor is close enough to inspect the lots before the sale closes, and bidding is online and open nationally.

Older estate workshops are listed machine by machine

The engineering and vehicle trades on Battle Farm and around Portman Road work out of units that have been there for decades, and the contents show it. A machine shop holds lathes, mills, grinders and saws bought over a long time, some with hours left in them and a tool room that the trade in Wokingham, Bracknell, Newbury and Basingstoke is within easy reach of at a viewing day. A vehicle repairer has lifts, tyre and brake equipment, diagnostic kit and a paint booth that needs proper decommissioning.

We list each machine as a single lot with its tooling and lot the stores by the drawer and the shelf. Paint booths and compressors are described with their extraction and disconnection needs, so the buyer's rigger prices the job.

Access on these estates varies. Where a yard is shared or a road is busy, collection runs in booked slots and the heavy lifts are booked for a quieter time, agreed with you before the window opens.

Distribution units and hire yards at Theale

A distribution unit at Theale holds racking, forklifts, pallet wrappers, conveyors and dock levellers, with junction 12 next door. Racking is lotted by the run with beam sizes and bay counts stated, and the buyer dismantles and loads it. Forklifts need no lifting to remove. A week is a normal collection window for a shed of that kind, depending on the number of lots.

Where an operator is moving to a larger shed, we sort what goes with them and what stays, and tag the kept items before the catalogue is written.

Plant hire yards and construction contractors around the town add excavators, dumpers, compressors and site cabins, which suit the contractors along the M4 from Slough to Newbury and need no lifting to remove. Office furniture and IT from any of these sites go in last, once the floor is clear.

The auction

The sale runs as an online timed auction, open for bidding for a fixed period with a viewing day at the site before the close. Lots close in sequence, and a late bid extends the closing time for that lot so nobody is beaten by the clock. Bidders register online, and the sale is advertised to the trade for that type of equipment.

Lots are offered as seen under the auction terms, and buyers are expected to inspect before bidding. The buyer pays the hammer price plus a buyer's premium, with VAT charged where it applies and shown separately on the invoice. Once paid, the buyer collects within the agreed window. Our staff are on site throughout collection to check off each lot and control access.

For very large sites the sale may be split into two or more auctions, so the building empties in stages and production can continue in one area while another is cleared.

The complete site dispersal auctions page covers what a site dispersal involves, preparing the site, removal and heavy lifting, timescales and what to expect.

Questions about selling in Reading

We are moving the business to a bigger unit near Basingstoke. Can we sell what we are leaving behind and keep the rest?

Yes. Tell us before we catalogue which items are moving with you, and we tag them so they are not lotted or photographed. Everything else goes in the sale. It helps to decide early, because the cost of moving a machine is often more than it would fetch at auction, and we can give you a view on that when we first visit. Once the viewing has happened, the list should not change.

Our landlord is a pension fund and wants the unit back in good order. Does the auction get in the way of that?

It should help, not hinder. We sell to the walls so that racking, benches, compressors and the office contents all leave, which is most of the strip out done at no cost to you. Buyers arrange and cover the cost of the removal of their lots, to a method agreed before the day, and any fixed items that need a landlord's consent are checked before they are listed. The final clean and dilapidations remain yours, but there is far less left to deal with.
