Peterborough has a large engineering base with a long link to diesel engines, agricultural machinery and precision manufacturing. Food processing, packaging and printing firms are also common, and the city has become a distribution point for the East of England. Fengate, known locally as Eastern Industry, is the largest estate and has units from small workshops to national depots. Orton Southgate and Woodston in the south hold engineering works, warehousing and trade counters. Lynch Wood is mainly offices. The Gateway site at Alwalton has large logistics sheds beside the A1(M).

The A1(M) passes the west of the city with junction 17 for the A605 and junction 18 for the A47. The A47 crosses east to Wisbech and Norwich and the A15 runs north to Lincoln. The A1139 parkway links the estates to each other. Peterborough station is on the East Coast Main Line.
